Etelan Chateau

Etelan Chateau

Etelan Chateau was built at the end of the 1400’s in the flamboyant gothic style and is classed a historic monument.

Etelan Chateau is situated between the Tancarville and Brotonne Bridges in the heart of the Caux-Seine Valley region. The chateau, which has been visited by François I, Catherine de’ Medici and Voltaire, has a chapel dedicated to Mary Magdelane dating from the 1st Norman Renaissance and which has been compared to those at those of Blois, Chenonceau and Amboise Chatateaux. The parkland is in the remarkable setting of a landscape that hasn’t changed in centuries.

a word from the chateau’s owners

The story started with Françoise Boudier who came here from Le Havre with her husband in the 70’s and fell in love with what was practically a ruin. Today her sons, Alain and Marc, have taken over running the chateau.

“Our mother passed us the baton 2 years ago. She tells us little by little about the history of the site, the anecdotes that she has kept to herself until now. Our task is to keep the place going. It’s now part of our family’s history. When our father decided to buy Etelan Chateau,we all had quite different occupations and didn’t realise it would be a lifetime’s commitment! Today, we get a lot of real pleasure out of spending our retirement showing the public around the chateau. It was mainly our father’s passion for history which made him buy it, a passion he passed on to us. We’re both lucky to live close by, our houses are in the grounds, so we’re always on hand. We show visitors around ourselves these days and we enjoy talking about the chateau’s history to the curious. Even though it hasn’t played a big part in France’s history, it remains a reasonably-sized chateau which is the pride of the village.”
